Strength 3

This came from someone's hols to South Africa and first thing - it looks a bit cheap and nasty. Like one of those own brands from a a French Hypermarket. It looks inviting in the cup, and the smell is definitely enticing. Even the first gulp gives you a warm, comforting feeling. It tastes cosy. But as you work your way down you discover some kind of weird bitter chocolatey taste that builds and builds with every sip. Between sips, the bitterness lingers on the back of your tongue in a not altogether pleasant way. We've had three cups of this before we could finally make up our minds: it's not great, but as a one off, it's passable. 6/10

This was the first one I'd made in a while and je-sus this came out blacker than the Black Hole Of Calcutta. So what's with the delicate looking butterflies on the front of this I wonder? Now, I'm sure I didn't cock-up the brewing process, and this is officially rated a strength 3, so how it ended up a throat puncher I'll never know. But I think I have to face facts: that I over did it and that the strength here, while welcome, is slightly false and it's a really bitter cup that needs an extra tweak of sugar to get it down. I've enjoyed it though - a perfect afternoon pick-me-up. An easy 7/10 for this one. Shame we can only have one cup from the tiny packet.

The notion of this one is a cheeky little monkey messing around with a magic tea pot hanging about on a branch. Despite all that nonsense, this is a nice little brew. It's a strength 3 but has a really good and powerful taste. It's just lacking some depth - it's shallower than Jodie Marsh on Mastermind. As soon as you've swallowed - it's gone. Yes, that's another reference to Jodie Marsh. It's a great afternoon coffee - or one to keep dosing up on all day long. You'll never feel like you've had too many, but you'll enjoy each one. I may even buy a bigger pack....  8/10

This Kopi coffee we got with the full info sheet - and man do they love their coffees. Read the blurb below if you don't believe me - this is the care they put into describing just one coffee. Our problem with it has been the coarseness of the grind in the pack we bought. It's really grainy which has led to a few under-endowed cups. Once we realised that though and cranked it up a notch, we got more of what we were after. A fine tasting cup and not overly bitter. Still nothing to scream and shout about - particularly for top-of-the-range £7 price tag which has definitely cost it a point. Maybe this one has gone off a bit - it being last months coffee?  (7/10)

We picked this one up at the Tea and Coffee festival - and here's the idea. You join the Kopi Gourmet Coffee Club, and every month they send you a new fancy coffee. This is our first go - and it's very definitely a delicate coffee. Normally when people use the words "delicate flavour" they usually mean "f*ck-all flavour" and in this case its half true. This is a fine enough coffee - very coarsely ground so you really need to spoon it up to get the taste - and you cant really over do it. It just won't let you. Sometimes though, I want to make a coffee so strong that I can't even drink it and have to use it to clean the drains. Not with this little flower. It just left me wanting a bit more - which is lucky as we've got one more Kopi coffee to try. We like the idea though - swish coffee through the post. As soon as you open this packet, the smell of top notch coffee just pours out all over you, even though it's a whole bean coffee and not even ground yet. Grinding it just amplifies the aroma - it's like the aromatic version of the Siren's song - once you smell this baby you would cross a barren desert for days just to track down the source. This one is easy to make too - you can throw in as much as you like, and it just gets better and better. You will never reach the point of a throat burner. And finally the taste - it's heaven. Yes, slightly citrussy, but now we are coffee drinking pros, we like that. Do your self a favour and get some. (10/10)

Percol have gone and done it with this one. It's a bog standard strength 3, the packaging is the usual Percol awfulness and yet it's bloody marvelous. Every time, without fail, it's come out punchy, smooth and satisfying. Even a child could make a good cup of this one - unlike that Waitrose one of a few days back where one grain too many or less rendered the whole mug repulsive. The fact that it looks so bland in the pack may be adds to this one's appeal - Percol certainly aren't singing from the rooftops about it. They should be! Wait for it.. 10/10!

This is another good Percol, despite yet another cold "garden seed" packet design. It tastes consistently good all the way down the cup too - there's no build up of bitterness. But then again this lack of any kind of aftertaste makes it taste a little shallow tasting. When it's gone, it's gone. A respectable 7/10

This is the best Percol we've had so far. There's nothing really to make it stand out and talk about - no aromas or notes as they claim on the packet. But it just delivers on smooth, full flavour with a pleasant  lingering coffee after taste. Every cup we made was consistantly good - you just can't cock this one up. It's just a shame it's yet another "grass seed" piece of packaging from Percol - stick this in a glossy packet and suddenly you have a luxury, quality coffee here. Petty to mark it down one for that but, hey ho - it's a 9 down to an 8/10.

We can't knock this one just for being half strength can we? It does clearly say it's half caffeine on the side of the packet. For a coffee that's been through an industrial process, it's still got a lot of flavour and you wouldn't really know it had been mucked around with. It starts fine enough too - but as you get further down the cup, the lack of punch starts to grate. Eventually it becomes a bit sickly with the taste of the milk over powering the content. But that's because we like our coffee strong - so this coffee is actually delivering what it says it would. For most people it's probably a 7 or 8 score, but for this judge only a 6/10.
